Reports from the BBC have revealed that members of the elite British forces, specifically the Special Boat Service (SBS), are under investigation for a controversial operation carried out in Libya two years ago.
The Daily Mail reported that the investigation involves up to five members of the special forces and focuses on an incident that included a car chase and shooting in Libya. The exact details of the incident and the identities of those involved have not yet been revealed.
The BBC confirmed that the investigation has been ongoing for several months but has not yet reached the stage of formally pressing charges.
The Special Boat Service is one of the most important elite units in the British Army, alongside the Special Air Service (SAS). The SBS is known for its specialization in maritime operations and recruits its members from the Royal Marines.
It is noteworthy that British special forces have participated in previous operations on Libyan soil, particularly during the NATO campaign against the regime of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Reports also indicated their presence during the February 17th revolution.
This investigation comes at a time when British special forces are facing increased scrutiny over their conduct in conflict zones. It was revealed last week that nine of its members could face charges of war crimes in Syria.
According to data from the British Ministry of Defense, there are at least two cases under review by the military prosecution, one involving a single individual and the other eight individuals. The ministry did not disclose details of these cases or whether they are related to each other.
