Libya recently concluded its participation in the 51st meeting of the Regional Committee of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, held in Doha, Qatar. The Minister of Tourism in the Government of National Unity, Nasr al-Din al-Fazzani, led the Libyan delegation.
The meeting participation includes the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization, reflecting the great importance of the tourism sector internationally. Participants discussed several important topics that contribute to the development of tourism in the Middle East region, most notably:
* Developing medical and wellness tourism: The focus was on the importance of this type of tourism and the possibility of utilizing the region’s abundant natural resources to achieve sustainable development in this field.
* Encouraging tourism investment: Ways to attract more investment to the tourism sector in the region were discussed, along with facilitating procedures for investors to encourage them to inject more funds into this vital sector.
* Promoting sports tourism: The importance of this type of tourism was highlighted, along with the possibility of utilizing major sporting events hosted by the region to promote it as an attractive tourist destination.
* Providing funding for tourism projects: Mechanisms for financing joint tourism projects in the Middle East region were discussed, along with providing the necessary financial support for their implementation on the ground.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister al-Fazzani held several meetings with his counterparts from participating countries, notably the Egyptian Minister of Tourism. These meetings discussed opportunities for cooperation between Libya and these countries in various tourism fields, along with exchanging successful experiences.
