Libyan radio on the World Radio Day

On World Radio Day, celebrated every February 13th, we acknowledge the importance of this media outlet, which continues to hold its place and vital role in people’s lives.

The History of Radio in Libya

The roots of Libyan radio date back to July 15, 1957, when the first Libyan radio station was launched in Benghazi, Tripoli, and Al-Bayda, under the name “Radio of the United Libyan Kingdom” or “House of Libyan Radio.” Since then, radio in Libya has evolved to include numerous local and regional stations broadcasting diverse programs presented by Ahmed Gnaba and Ahmed Al-Hsayri supported by the translators Mustafa Al-Sarraj and Ahmed Bin Zaytoon.

Radio stations in Libya vary between government and private stations, covering different regions and cities. The following is a review of some of these stations:

Radio Stations in Tripoli

 * Tripoli Da’wah Radio (89.9 FM): A religious station broadcasting from the Zenata area.

 * Radio Libya (90.3 FM): A national station broadcasting from Zawiya al-Dahmani.

 * Qimam Al-Andalus Radio (90.5 FM): broadcasting from the Andalus neighborhood.

 * Radio Zone Libya (88.1 FM): broadcasting from Zenata.

 * Radio Al-Meda (92.7 FM): broadcasting from Zenata.

 * Radio Ranwa (92.9 FM): broadcasting from the Damascus neighborhood.

 * Lebda FM Radio (93.8 FM): broadcasting from the Andalus neighborhood.

 * Ain Zara Radio (95.1 FM): broadcasting from Tripoli.

 * Al-Ittihad Radio (97.9 FM): broadcasting from Bab Ben Ghashir.

 * University of Tripoli Radio (101.7 FM): broadcasting from the University of Tripoli.

Radio Stations in Al-Bayda

 * Al-Jabal Radio: Established in 1996, it is a government radio station affiliated with the Benghazi Radio and Television Authority.

 * Sawt Libya Radio: Established in 2011, it operates intermittently.

 * Al-Mukhtar Radio: Affiliated with Omar Al-Mukhtar University, it was established in 2018.

 * Mishkat Al-Nabowa Radio: Affiliated with the Al-Bayda Endowments Authority.

Radio Stations in Shahhat

 * Qurnia Radio: Established in 2013, it is affiliated with Shahhat Municipal Council.

Radio Stations in Zintan

 * Western Mountain Radio: Established in 2011, it stopped broadcasting in 2017.

 * Al-Thaqafiya Radio in Zintan: Affiliated with the Office of Culture and Knowledge Development in Zintan Municipality, launched in 2024.

 * Holy Quran Radio: Broadcasts recorded religious programs.

Radio Stations in Zliten

 * Zliten Al-Hur Radio: Established in 2011, it is supervised by the Media Office of Zliten Municipality.

 * Biladna Radio: A youth social radio, stopped broadcasting in 2012.

 * Sawt Al-Bayyna Radio: A religious radio broadcasting Quran recitation and religious lessons.

 * Holy Quran Radio Zliten.

 * Nour Al-Iman Radio: Established in 2014, it specializes in spreading Islamic education lessons.

Radio Stations in Bani Walid

 * Bani Walid Local Radio: Governmental, opened in 2003, and is considered semi-stopped.

 * Al-Zaytouna Radio: Private, opened in 2019

Radio Stations in Tarhuna

 * Tarhuna Local Radio: Opened in 2007, stopped working in 2013, then returned in 2017, stopped again in 2020, and reopened in the same year .

 * Al-Shurouq Radio: Affiliated with the Media Development Center.

Radio Stations in Al-Jufra

 * Al-Jufra Local Radio: Established in 1998.

 * Houn Youth Radio:  a music radio station.

  * Sokna Radio: Operated for six years and then stopped.

 * Waddan Radio.

*Waddan FM

 * Al-Shati Local Radio: Launched in 2001 and stopped in 2012 upon being attacked and vandalized.

Radio Stations in Al-Ajilat

 * Al-Ajilat Local Radio: Opened in 2002 and stopped working in 2024 due to armed clashes in Jdaida Municipality.

 * Al-Jamil Radio: Opened in 2012 and is currently out of operation.

 * Al-Manshiya Radio: Opened in 2019 and is still operating.

 – Government Radio Stations:

   * Sawt Benghazi (Voice of Benghazi)

   * Benghazi Local

   * Endowments Radio

   * WAL 92.5FM: one of the Libyan News Agency (LANA) platforms.

   * Al-Ummah

   * Al-Mustaqbal

   * University Radio

 * Private Radio Stations:

   * Hertz

   * Al-Jawhara

   * Al-Ufuq
