During a UN Security Council session dedicated to the Libyan situation, the US representative emphasized that a comprehensive political settlement is the only path to stability, warning against any attempts to undermine UN efforts through external interference.
The representative praised the appointment of Hannah Tetteh as the new UN envoy, noting that her extensive experience will be crucial in advancing the political process. She also commended forming the Advisory Committee and the UN mission in breaking the political deadlock.
She stressed the need to unify Libya’s divided institutions, affirming that amending the arms embargo could play a role in achieving this goal. She warned against the continued oil smuggling operations that drain the country’s resources for the benefit of specific groups.
She called for the need to reach an agreement on a unified budget to protect the Libyan economy, expressing her appreciation for the efforts of Stephanie Khoury in dealing with the Central Bank crisis. She revealed that the visit of the “AFRICOM” delegation and US envoy Richard Norland to Libya aims to support the ceasefire.
