Addressing the United Nations Security Council during a session focused on the Libyan crisis, France’s representative underscored the critical need for a unified Libyan government, capable of swiftly organizing presidential and legislative elections aligned with the Security Council mandates. The French delegation urged all Libyan factions to collaborate fully with newly appointed UN envoy, Hannah Tetteh, to break the current political deadlock and facilitate a path towards national polls.
The representative acknowledged establishing an advisory committee tasked with propelling the political process forward. Furthermore, she emphasized the imperative of executing a comprehensive plan for foreign forces withdrawal and mercenaries from Libyan territory, while prioritizing reunifying security and military institutions to safeguard national sovereignty.
In a related vein, France stressed the significance of bolstering transparency in managing the Libyan financial resources and establishing a consolidated national budget. The delegation expressed concern over persistent human rights abuses, including arbitrary detentions and the recent discovery of mass graves.
The French representative also issued a strong condemnation of the attempted assassination of State Minister Adel Jumaa, reaffirming France’s unwavering support for efforts aimed at restoring stability and unity within Libya.
