Libya takes a step towards national reconciliation with charter signing in Addis Ababa

In an important move towards peace and stability, Libya signed the “National Peace and Reconciliation Charter” in Addis Ababa.

The signing ceremony was attended by high-level figures, including the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, among other officials

Bankole Adeoye, the African Union’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, hailed the importance of the event calling it “historical”, reaffirming the AU’s commitment to supporting reconciliation efforts in Libya.

This signing comes amid efforts by the Libyan Presidential Council, backed by the African Union and the United Nations, to hold a comprehensive reconciliation conference. However, these efforts face obstacles, such as the recently passed reconciliation law by the House of Representatives, which clashes with the Presidential Council’s vision.

Last December, Dr. Al-Siddiq Khalifa Haftar, head of the High Commission for National Reconciliation, renewed his call for concerted efforts to achieve reconciliation, stressing that it is the only path to stability. He emphasized the importance of a comprehensive national dialogue to address the repercussions of the conflict, considering the Libyan people the true leaders of the reconciliation process.
