Archaeological discoveries in Tukra, Shahat, and Qalma ignite researchers' hopes

Libya continues to astonish the world with its successive archaeological discoveries, confirming its status as a land rich in historical treasures that await unearthing.

Prehistoric Drawings Illuminate the Dawn of Civilization

Tukra Antiquities Observatory announced the discovery of a new archaeological site dating back to prehistoric times in Al-Militaniyah area. The site is a cave adorned with drawings and shapes depicting ancient wildlife, featuring images of animals and birds that once inhabited the region, such as gazelles, lions, and various avian species. The site is currently undergoing thorough scientific study and documentation.

Roman Tombstone Reveals a Centuries-Old Tale

In a related development, Shahat Antiquities Observatory unveiled the discovery of an inscription representing a tombstone belonging to a person named “Kharis bin Likos,” who died at the age of 12, and dates back to the Roman era. This discovery followed a report from a local citizen, prompting a team from Shahat Antiquities Observatory to visit the site in the Northern Cemetery area, where two tombs were uncovered, and the scientific procedures were taken. A collection of valuable archaeological artifacts was also found and transported to the offices for cleaning and the preparation of a detailed scientific and technical report.

Ministry Supports Discoveries and Protects Heritage

In a step that reflects its commitment to protecting archaeological heritage, the Libyan Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ali Qalma, issued a decision to task a specialized committee with preparing a final report to assess the archaeological discoveries in Shahat, and to provide proposals and recommendations for the protection of these historical landmarks. This decision follows the initial report submitted by the Shahat Antiquities Observer, which revealed the discovery of an important archaeological tombstone last February.

The Minister praised the efforts of the specialized teams and called on citizens to participate in the protection of antiquities and to report any new discoveries, stressing that Libyan heritage is an integral part of the national identity.
