Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Council Moussa Al-Koni met with the Ambassador of the UK to Libya, Martin Longden, to discuss ways to achieve political and administrative stability in the country and international efforts to advance the political process.
During the meeting, Al-Koni emphasized the importance of adopting a three-region system, which includes establishing independent legislative councils in each region, as a fundamental step toward achieving balance and stability across all parts of Libya. He also highlighted that a governorate-based executive system would enable different regions to manage their projects and services independently. This approach would alleviate the burden on the capital, Tripoli, and allow the central government to focus on its sovereign responsibilities.
The discussions also addressed the latest political developments in Libya, with a particular focus on international efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement to end the current political deadlock. For his part, Ambassador Longden reiterated the UK’s continued interest in the Libyan file and expressed his country’s readiness to support efforts aimed at resolving the crisis. He stressed the importance of engaging with all political parties to overcome differences and pave the way for parliamentary and presidential elections.
Al-Koni reaffirmed the Presidential Council’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and its advisory committee, underscoring the need for practical and effective proposals to address unresolved issues. He noted that such steps would help create the necessary conditions for holding elections and achieving the desired stability in Libya.
