Directors of marine wealth offices in Libya issued a joint statement aimed at reforming the marine wealth sector, providing necessary support to fishermen, and organizing work within specialized offices. This statement followed a comprehensive meeting that brought together sector officials to discuss the challenges facing fishermen and develop effective solutions.
Directors of marine wealth offices from the areas of Harawa, Gulf of Sidra, Sirte, Ajdabiya, Benghazi, Al-Marj, Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, and Derna participated in the meeting, in addition to representatives from the Fishermen’s Syndicate in Benghazi. During the meeting, the importance of activating the role of marine wealth offices in municipalities was emphasized to ensure the provision of necessary services to fishermen and accurately enumerate all marine fishing areas.
The statement included several vital issues, including administrative problems and job settlements within the sector, the current situation of ports and fishing harbors, fees imposed on fishermen, addressing the problem of illegal harbors and their negative impact on the sector, in addition to enumerating all marine areas and completing the necessary procedures to organize the sector efficiently.
The statement also stressed the need for close coordination between the General Command of the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Marine Wealth to combat the smuggling of fish resources, which is considered a vital economic resource that must be protected from illegal exploitation.
