The U.S. Special Envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, expressed deep concern from the United States regarding the increasing cases of arbitrary arrest in Libya.
The U.S. Embassy, via its official account on the “X” platform, clarified that the United States shares the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s growing concern about these arrests, and calls for the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained individuals.
For its part, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya expressed “alarm” over the wave of arbitrary detentions and arrests carried out by law enforcement agencies and security parties throughout Libya. The mission considered that these parties are exploiting their authority to target individuals based on their alleged political affiliations, to silence dissent, and to undermine the independence of the judiciary, which creates a climate of fear, restricts civil space, and erodes the rule of law.
