Libya’s Oil Production Data Gap: OPEC vs. National Oil Corporation
A recent OPEC report revealed that Libya’s oil production stood at 1.279 million barrels per day (bpd) as of February 25, according to the organization’s data.
However, this figure conflicts with statements from Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC), which reported production of 1.408 million bpd during the same period—a discrepancy of 129,000 barrels in favor of the local data.
The gap between the two reports has raised questions among analysts about the accuracy of international and domestic oil production assessments, particularly given Libya’s ongoing security and economic challenges.
The difference highlights the complexities of measuring output in a volatile environment.
OPEC was founded in 1960 in Baghdad. OPEC welcomed Libya as a member in 1962. It now includes 12 member countries and works to coordinate oil policies to stabilize global markets.
