Joe Gattas, the head coach of Al-Ahli Benghazi basketball team, affirmed his strong ambition to lead the team to achieve all possible titles this season and strive to return the club to the Basketball Africa League (BAL) championship, which is held under the supervision of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
In press statements, Gattas explained that his contract with the club extends for two seasons, with a clause allowing for renewal in the event of winning the Libyan League title, noting that his biggest dream is to experience coaching in the BAL championship.
Regarding the team’s non-participation in preparatory friendly tournaments, such as the Dubai International Championship, the coach clarified that it was based on a strategic decision taken by the administration to preserve the budget allocated for signing distinguished professional players during the crucial stages of the season.
Regarding the professional players’ file, Gattas stated that negotiations are still ongoing due to the unclear schedule of the Libyan League’s final rounds, but he revealed the club’s plans to strengthen the team’s ranks with two professional players in the Point Guard and Center positions, according to specific technical and physical criteria.
He added that the contracting process will take place after the conclusion of the leagues in China and Australia, noting the strong competition from clubs in Puerto Rico seeking to sign the same players.
In conclusion, Gattas praised the great fan support to Al-Ahli Benghazi, describing its fans as the “largest in the city,” and pledged to deliver a performance befitting the reputation and history of the prestigious club.
