Medical reports from several Libyan hospitals confirmed over 150 injuries among children during al-Fitr holiday, primarily caused by dangerous toy guns firing beads or pellets. In Tripoli, Tripoli Eye Hospital reported 60 eye injuries from pellet guns, with doctors urging parents to avoid purchasing these toys.
In Sabha, the Medical Center received 63 cases on the first day of Eid, ranging from minor to moderate injuries, with two cases requiring emergency surgery. Medical staff emphasized the severe risks these toys pose to eye safety and called for public awareness campaigns.
Meanwhile, Al-Shahid Mohamed Al-Magariaf Hospital in Ajdabiya documented over 30 eye injuries caused by weapon-like toys, despite prior warnings issued to the public.
In response, the Municipal Guard’s spokesperson, Amhamed Al-Naem, announced a nationwide campaign to confiscate firearm-shaped toys, particularly those launching projectiles like beads or arrows. He confirmed that inspection units across Libya had begun seizures and urged citizens to cooperate by disposing of these dangerous items.
Mohamed Baio, head of the Libyan Media Foundation, condemned bead guns as an unforgivable crime, stating on Facebook that these toys had caused complete vision loss or permanent disabilities in many children. He blamed importers, retailers, and regulatory authorities for failing to block these items at customs checkpoints, noting that hospitals were overwhelmed with injured children during the holiday.
