Hashem Abedi, the younger brother of the Manchester Arena bomber, is set to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 18 September, facing charges of attempting to attack four prison officers at HMP Frankland.

The 28-year-old Libyan national, who was previously held in solitary confinement at Durham’s high-security facility, was sentenced in 2020 to a minimum of 55 years for aiding the planning of the 2017 suicide bombing. He now faces fresh charges including the attempted murder of three officers, assaulting a fourth, and possession of an improvised knife.

According to counter-terrorism police in northeast England, the charges follow an extensive investigation by Durham authorities and prison officials. The alleged incident resulted in serious injuries to three officers, who were hospitalized. Abedi was subsequently transferred from Frankland following the attack, which reportedly involved makeshift blades and hot cooking oil.
