From Canada to Kufra: A Libyan Doctor’s Humanitarian Mission Revives Hope for Patients

eng4

Dr. Ibrahim Badr Al-Zwai, a cardiology and vascular consultant at Edmonton Hospital in Canada and faculty member at the University of Alberta, continues to write a rare story of professional loyalty and humanitarian commitment to his homeland—despite living abroad.

Each year, Dr. Al-Zwai organizes three medical missions to Libya, conducting free catheterization procedures and workshops across hospitals in Kufra, Al-Batnan, Benghazi, Tajoura, Sirte, Misrata, Sabha, and Zliten. These procedures, which often cost over 20,000 Libyan dinars in the private sector, are offered at no charge.

His efforts go beyond treatment: he consistently brings essential medications and equipment to alleviate the suffering of patients and bridge gaps in local healthcare infrastructure.

Currently, he is stationed at the Bunakhila Medical Center in Kufra, working alongside a medical team from Benghazi and Tripoli to examine hundreds of cases and perform both diagnostic and therapeutic catheterizations.

For many, his initiative represents a beacon of hope—easing the burden of travel and medical costs—and serves as an inspiring model for diaspora physicians who may choose to follow in his footsteps.
