During high-level meetings at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss Egypt’s role in addressing key regional crises and advancing multilateral diplomacy.
Multilateral Engagement and Strategic Coordination
Guterres commended Egypt’s active role in promoting peace and development across the Middle East and Africa, describing Cairo as a central partner in the multilateral system. Both sides agreed to deepen coordination between Egypt and the UN to support regional stability and global cooperation.
Libya: Preserving Sovereignty and Advancing Elections
Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to a Libyan-led political solution, emphasizing the urgency of holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. He called for the immediate withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory, stressing that national ownership of the process is essential to long-term stability.
Gaza: Ceasefire, Humanitarian Access, and Rebuilding
The two officials reviewed the deteriorating situation in Gaza. Abdelatty urged intensified efforts to secure a ceasefire and ensure unrestricted humanitarian aid. He rejected any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians or undermine their national rights, reiterating Egypt’s support for a sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He also announced Egypt’s intention to host an international conference for Gaza’s reconstruction, in partnership with the United Nations, the Palestinian Authority, and global stakeholders.
Sudan: Supporting Unity and Humanitarian Relief
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s consistent support for Sudan’s unity and stability. He stressed the importance of preserving national institutions and called for lifting the siege on El Fasher to alleviate humanitarian suffering.
Iran: Facilitating Technical Cooperation with the IAEA
Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s diplomatic role in facilitating the recent agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He noted that Cairo hosted the signing ceremony, which marked the resumption of technical cooperation between the two sides
