Acting Oil and Gas Minister Khalifa Abdel Sadiq has signaled Libya’s commitment to forging new energy partnerships, holding high-level talks with the European Union and Germany on the country’s planned energy transition.
Abdel Sadiq met separately with Nicola Orlando, Head of the EU Delegation to Libya, and German Ambassador Ralf Trapp. During these discussions, the Minister showcased the Ministry’s ambitious blueprint for a sustainable energy future, centred on achieving a balanced energy mix of hydrocarbons and renewables by 2035.
A critical part of this plan, the Minister confirmed, is a strong environmental pledge: Libya aims to completely phase out gas flaring by the year 2030.
He emphasised that the “Energy Generation” initiative—a platform featuring various exhibitions and conferences—has been vital in creating opportunities to solidify ties with European partners. Crucially, the Minister stressed that Libya is actively seeking European and international investment to realise this vision, which he argued will not only diversify the nation’s energy resources but also generate much-needed new job opportunities for its youth.
