The international community, led by the United States, has reaffirmed its commitment to securing Libya’s future by demanding the integration of security structures across the east and west and promoting independent economic institutions.
This commitment was highlighted in an official statement released today following a high-level international officials’ meeting on Libya, which the US chaired on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s high-level week for 2025.
Participants—including senior officials from Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, and the United Kingdom (though neighbouring nations like Tunisia and Algeria were notably absent)—agreed that supporting institutions like the National Oil Corporation, the Central Bank of Libya, and the Audit Bureau is crucial to ensure resource stability and encourage investment.
The meeting welcomed the 2025 amendment to the UN arms embargo, which has allowed for initial steps, such as joint training and technical support, towards achieving Libyan security integration.
Furthermore, the attendees renewed their support for the UN roadmap, stressing that unifying political institutions is vital for protecting the country’s sovereignty, securing its borders, and preventing exploitation for arms smuggling and irregular migration. Washington concluded by praising the progress report by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Hanna Tetteh, on the political roadmap and the UN mission’s efforts to facilitate comprehensive dialogue
