A regular, organised voluntary return flight departed from Sebha International Airport, carrying approximately 180 migrants who are citizens of Mali, and heading to Bamako Airport. The journey was overseen by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) as part of its dedicated Voluntary Return and Reintegration programme.
The central aim of this humanitarian operation is to alleviate the suffering of migrants stranded in Libya who wish to return to their home countries. The programme offers a safe and structured return, alongside providing opportunities to support their successful reintegration into their original communities. The process for the migrants’ return was facilitated and secured with support from the European Union and in full coordination with the Agency for Combatting Illegal Migration in Libya, ensuring the operation proceeded seamlessly. The IOM continues to arrange voluntary return flights periodically from various Libyan airports, cementing this as an approved humanitarian mechanism, in partnership with international partners, to manage the situations of migrants and organise their repatriation in line with international humanitarian standards.
