In a bid to deepen the strategic relationship between the two nations, Abdullah Al-Lafi, Deputy of the Presidential Council, met in Tripoli on Wednesday with the Italian Ambassador, Gianluca Alberini. Discussions focused on expanding the scope of cooperation at both the political and security levels, with the clear objective of serving mutual interests and bolstering Libya’s stability.
The agenda placed a significant focus on the challenges of illegal migration, which included an assessment of the risks this phenomenon poses to regional and national security. The two sides deliberated on establishing integrated mechanisms to counter it, including enhanced cooperation in protecting borders and coastlines, and dismantling smuggling networks.
The necessity of supporting the trajectory sponsored by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) was also discussed in detail. Both officials stressed that the political process and its roadmap represent the only feasible framework for breaking the current state of deadlock and creating the necessary conditions for establishing permanent stability.
For his part, Al-Lafi affirmed the Presidential Council’s unwavering commitment to supporting the political path and strengthening domestic stability. He stressed the importance of continuous consultation and coordination with the Italian side on all matters of mutual concern, which he believes will open up broader horizons for bilateral cooperation.
