Italian diplomat: Reviving UN-backed political process is the sole path out of Libya’s ‘unsustainable’ situation

Geneva: Stefano Pisotti, Italy’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, stressed that reviving the political track under UN supervision is imperative. According to Pisotti, this measure represents the only way to overcome the ongoing division in Libya and meet the legitimate democratic aspirations of the Libyan people.
Speaking at the 60th session of the Human Rights Council, Pisotti declared the current situation in Libya to be “unsustainable,” citing the recent clashes in Tripoli as the clearest evidence of the security fragility.
Regarding joint efforts to address the human rights crises, the Italian diplomat expressed his country’s appreciation for the progress made through cooperation between the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Mission, and the Libyan authorities.
Pisotti also issued an explicit call to the Libyan authorities to strengthen their collaboration with specialised UN mechanisms to ensure justice for victims. He underlined the necessity of inclusive participation from civil society, including women and youth, in shaping Libya’s future.
Pisotti concluded by reaffirming Italy’s commitment to fully supporting various UN initiatives, such as the “Raidat” initiative, which aims to empower women and girls and raise awareness of their rights
