The United Nations is preparing for a Security Council session, scheduled for 14 October, where the central debate will focus on renewing the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which is set to expire on the 31st of the month.
The meeting is set to take place while Russia holds the presidency of the Security Council for October. During the session, members are expected to underscore the necessity of supporting and bolstering the Libyan political track and moving towards stability in the country, at a time when ongoing challenges persist.
At the meeting, Hannah Tetteh, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Libya, will present her periodic report to member states. The report will cover the latest developments across the political, security, and humanitarian spheres, providing the Council with the information needed to determine its decision regarding the mission’s mandate renewal.
