The Tunisian capital hosted the 17th meeting of the Chiefs of Staff of the ‘5+5 Defence’ initiative member states. General Lieutenant Mohammed Al-Haddad, Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army in the Western Region, participated in the gathering with a military delegation. He was welcomed by General Lieutenant Habib Al-Dhaif, Director General of the Tunisian Intelligence, Security, and Defence Agency.
The conference convened the Chiefs of Staff of the armed forces from all ten member nations: Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Malta, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, and Libya. Their agenda focused on discussing the security threats facing the Western Mediterranean region, addressing the difficulties impeding cooperation, and concluding with proposals to refine coordination frameworks to meet future challenges.
In his address to the attendees, Al-Haddad stressed that success in achieving regional security and peace requires intensive cooperation and coordination among the countries of the Western Mediterranean basin. Al-Haddad outlined the primary shared security challenges that must be confronted: terrorism, smuggling, narcotics, human trafficking, and irregular migration.
The Libyan Chief of Staff further asserted that the key to attaining shared security objectives lies in developing aerial and maritime surveillance mechanisms and strengthening capabilities in cyber security, crisis management, and counter-terrorism. He also called for the essential expansion of experience exchange and joint training exercises.
The proceedings of the 17th meeting concluded with a joint visit by the Libyan delegation and the participating military delegations to the Bardo National Museum in Tunisia.
