Tripoli activists reject EU migration policies

Activists in the city of Tripoli have demanded that Libyan authorities urgently review the agreements and memorandums signed with the European side. The goal of this review is to abolish clauses that permit accepting the migrants’ stay or returning those intercepted at sea to Libya, asserting that these policies impose unacceptable pressures on Libyan society.
In a statement issued today, Friday, the activists announced their categorical rejection of the strategy adopted by the European Union in handling the file of illegal migration. The activists contend that the policy of accommodating and housing migrants in modern facilities, instead of facilitating their return, is a practice that encourages them to remain in Libya. They view this as preparation for a settlement project that directly contradicts the will of the Libyan people.
The statement clarified that providing modern residences to migrants who had previously consented to voluntary return has strengthened their determination to stay inside the country, and prompted others to consider permanent settlement rather than continuing their journey to Europe. The activists argued that this approach ignores the Libyan public stance against settlement, which has been expressed through demonstrations and in official forums.
Concluding their statement, the activists directed a direct appeal to the United Nations, urging it to fully assume its responsibilities in protecting Libyan civilians from the serious repercussions resulting from the increasing number of migrants arriving from other countries. They called for a necessary comprehensive solution to the file that ensures Libya’s stability and respects the aspirations of its citizens.
