Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that the lack of domestic political stability in Libya remains the main obstacle preventing the resumption of cooperation projects between Tripoli and Moscow, despite continuous channels of communication and dialogue.
In statements given to Russia Today, Lavrov clarified that Russian companies are ready to implement existing agreements signed with Libyan parties. However, the volatile situation on the ground, which has persisted for years, has made progress impossible. The Minister also highlighted the deep historical relationship between the two countries, which spans more than seven decades since Libya’s independence, and confirmed the prior signing of significant agreements in areas of friendship and multilateral cooperation.
In a separate context, Lavrov strongly criticised what he described as the “illegitimate aggression” carried out by the West in 2011, noting that it was conducted under the guise of a UN Security Council resolution. He stressed that the repercussions of this intervention continue to affect the stability of both Libya and the entire region.
Regarding engagement with Libyan factions, Lavrov asserted that Moscow maintains continuous relations with all parties without exception. He clarified that Russia keeps up ongoing contacts with the General Command of the Armed Forces and with the Government of National Unity in Tripoli. Lavrov called for the continuation of dialogue between the Libyan East and West to reach a consensus formula that guarantees the country’s unity. The Minister concluded by expressing his hope that Libya would soon be able to fully restore its peace and stability.
