Stephanie Khoury, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Political Affairs, held diplomatic meetings with two ambassadors to follow up on the latest security and political developments in Libya, as well as the political process facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). Khoury underscored the importance of integrating human rights into the executive aspects of any anticipated structured dialogue being prepared for launch.
As part of these engagements, Khoury met yesterday with Aidar Aganin, the Russian Ambassador to Libya. Discussions with Aganin covered the recent political and security developments in the country and explored ways to advance the UN-sponsored political process, which is based on the roadmap submitted to the UN Security Council last August. Talks with the Russian side also affirmed the pivotal role of the Berlin Process in unifying international efforts to support the UN roadmap and push for a comprehensive political settlement.
In a related context, Khoury also met today with Josef Renggli, the Swiss Ambassador to Libya, to review the current situation, with a specific focus on updates to the political roadmap for elections, including the work of the Board of the High National Election Commission and its regulating legislative framework.
In a statement issued by the mission, it was noted that the comprehensive settlement aims to pave the way for holding free and inclusive national elections in Libya. Khoury also expressed the UN’s appreciation for Switzerland’s continuous commitment to supporting the Working Group on International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights that emerged from the Berlin Process, in its capacity as a co-chair, adding that she provided a briefing on the ongoing preparations for the structured dialogue during her meeting with the Swiss Ambassador.
