The spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tamim Khellaf, stated in remarks to the Italian news agency “Nova” that Cairo supports the view that overcoming the political stalemate in Libya necessitates the implementation of a “national roadmap” aimed at renewing the legitimacy of all institutions and paving the way for the unification of the executive authority.
In this context, the spokesperson affirmed that Egypt backs the efforts of the UN Special Envoy to Libya, Hannah Tetteh, including her proposal to establish an interim government to oversee preparations for elections. Khellaf regarded this proposal as an “important step towards a comprehensive solution” for the Libyan crisis.
Tamim Khellaf indicated that the Egyptian vision for resolving the crisis is founded on the principle of “exclusive Libyan ownership of the political process.” This vision also relies on strengthening legitimate institutions and the commitment to the reunification of the country’s executive, economic, and security bodies.
The spokesperson further stressed that Egypt fully supports an intra-Libyan solution and categorically rejects any foreign interference that could obstruct the national process. He added that the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries remains an indispensable precondition for restoring the authority of decision-making entirely to the Libyans themselves.
Concluding his statement, Khellaf emphasised the necessity of boosting regional and international coordination to support stability, highlighting the importance of the Neighbouring Countries’ Trilateral Mechanism, which includes Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, and which was recently reactivated to support the stabilisation process and restore Libya’s unity and full sovereignty.
