Sirte: Chief of Staff Meets Misrata Leadership to Forge Joint Force and Unify National Efforts

First Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, convened a meeting in Sirte with military and security leaders from the city of Misrata. This gathering was in response to the call by the General Commander of the Libyan Armed Forces, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who argued that the escalating Libyan crisis demands the unity of the nation’s vital patriotic forces to halt the deterioration harming citizens and the state’s prestige through joint national action.
In line with this direction, the Chief of General Staff emphasized the historical importance of Misrata and the capacity of its people to thwart promoters of division who are obstructing security and stability in the country. During the meeting, Khaled Haftar paid tribute to the attending leaders, viewing their step as proof that the honorable sons of Libya will not abandon their homeland, stressing that focusing on the future is the way to achieve shared ambitions, while also outlining the specific actions required to realize these desired changes.
The meeting yielded two central practical outcomes: first, the formation of a joint force specifically mandated to counter terrorism and illegal migration. Second, there was an emphatic confirmation of the necessity to halt media escalation that does not serve Libya’s supreme national interest. Haftar also detailed several points requiring action to achieve the sought-after transformation goals.
The security and military leadership from Misrata, in turn, expressed their pride in the development achieved by the General Command within the Armed Forces, alongside their admiration for the reconstruction efforts that all Libyans are proud of, hoping that building and development would extend to all cities and regions. The discussions concluded with an agreement to widen the base of participation and hold further meetings to cement this national dialogue, which must proceed free from any external dictates.
