The State of Libya renewed its affirmation of commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and its support for efforts to establish international peace and security, rejecting the use or threat of force. It stressed that true security is only achieved through just peace and comprehensive disarmament.
This was stated in the National Statement of the State of Libya, delivered by Ambassador Issam Omran Bin Zaitoun, a member of the Permanent Delegation to the UN, before the First Committee of the UN General Assembly concerning Disarmament and International Security, during the proceedings of the eightieth session held in New York on 17 October 2025.
Regarding the Palestinian Cause, the Ambassador strongly condemned the ongoing Zionist aggression against the Gaza Strip and the resulting humanitarian tragedy that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians, asserting that these crimes represent a stark violation of international law and a “stain on the forehead of humanity.” He called for an immediate ceasefire, the enabling of humanitarian aid entry, the reconstruction of Gaza, and holding those responsible for war crimes accountable.
In his speech, Ambassador Bin Zaitoun reiterated Libya’s firm stance rejecting nuclear armament programmes and weapons of mass destruction. He called on the international community to work towards a Middle East free of nuclear weapons, and to subject all relevant facilities to the safeguards regime of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The statement concluded by affirming that Libya will remain a sincere Arab voice within the United Nations, defending humanitarian values and the rights of peoples to freedom and dignity, foremost among them the Palestinian Arab people, renewing its commitment to multilateralism to achieve just and lasting peace globally.
