President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania has decisively refuted any implication that the recent Sixth G5 Sahel Summit in Nouakchott was intended to carry veiled threats or push for swift resolutions to the ongoing Libyan crisis. In exclusive remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Ghazouani emphasized that the primary goal of the summit was to highlight that a purely Libyan-Libyan resolution remains the essential foundation for lasting stability across the entire region.
The President highlighted the undeniable link between the persistent instability in Libya and the current state of unrest prevalent in the Sahel and Sahara regions, thereby establishing the Libyan situation as a critical element in regional stability assessments.
Ghazouani elaborated that external interventions have, unfortunately, played a significant role in extending the conflict and eroding a unified political front regarding Libya. He firmly stated that restoring Libyan sovereignty is inextricably linked to achieving broad national reconciliation and agreement among the Libyans themselves. Furthermore, he stressed the need to strengthen the African track and ensure that international stances are unified in support of any political settlement reached domestically.
The Mauritanian leader also noted that during Mauritania’s leadership of the African Union, the nation actively championed political efforts aimed at resolving the Libyan crisis, working hard to solidify varied continental perspectives on this crucial matter.
