The Martyr Mohammed Al-Maqrif Central Teaching Hospital in Ajdabiya witnessed a rare and complex surgical triumph with the successful removal of large hair masses from the stomach and intestines of a female patient. The patient had been suffering for an entire year from chronic abdominal pain, persistent nausea, and loss of appetite, without receiving an accurate diagnosis for her condition.
The hospital explained that the patient was transferred from a private clinic due to the high cost of the procedure. She was admitted to the General Surgery department under the supervision of Consultant Dr. Farhat Al-Saiti, who successfully provided the precise diagnosis: Rapunzel Syndrome. This is a rare psychiatric disorder caused by the habitual ingestion of hair, which leads to the formation of solid hairballs, medically known as a Trichobezoar.
After completing the necessary medical examinations, the patient was prepared, and the surgery was performed with complete success. The medical team managed to remove the entire hair mass without any complications occurring.
The hospital confirmed that the patient is currently in a stable condition, underscoring that this medical success reflects the high efficiency of the medical staff in managing rare and delicate cases, and their capacity to utilise the latest medical techniques to serve patients and achieve optimal therapeutic results.
