Italy Pledges €3 Million to World Food Programme for Sudanese Refugees in Libya

In a reaffirmation of its commitment, the Italian government has renewed its support for the Sudanese community affected by the crisis in Libya, allocating €3 million to the World Food Programme (WFP). The core objective of this grant is to secure essential food supplies and humanitarian assistance for the most vulnerable refugee groups.

This financial injection arrives as Sudanese refugees—who fled the armed conflict and economic collapse in their homeland, particularly from the Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile regions—endure acutely harsh living conditions.

The arrivals face immense obstacles ranging from residency in overcrowded and unstable shelters to a severe lack of adequate legal protection. Compounding these issues is their vulnerability to exploitation by smuggling networks, limited access to healthcare and educational opportunities, alongside the deep psychological toll inflicted by the ravages of war and the perilous desert crossing.

Since the outbreak of hostilities in Sudan in April 2023, Libya has received substantial waves of Sudanese refugees. Estimates suggest the number has surpassed 357,000 individuals by the close of August 2025, with projections indicating the total could approach 550,000 refugees by the end of the current year, involving a daily influx rate between one hundred and fifty people.
