Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdel Atty, hosted the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Hannah Tetteh, to discuss the latest developments in the Libyan crisis and explore ways to advance the political process toward a lasting and comprehensive resolution.
During the meeting, Abdel Atty underscored Cairo’s unyielding position that a political solution must spring from the Libyan people’s will alone, devoid of any external interference. The Minister stressed that this homegrown path is the sole guarantee for restoring security and stability to the nation.
Abdel Atty indicated that Egypt fully supports the United Nations’ endeavours to implement the Libyan roadmap. In this context, he emphasized the critical need for a unified government to be formed without delay. The primary mandate of this administration, he asserted, must be to oversee the simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as quickly as possible, noting that adherence to the declared timeline is essential to safeguard the credibility of this process.
The Minister also noted that achieving enduring stability in Libya hinges on adopting an integrated approach that addresses all facets of the crisis, encompassing its political, economic, security, and social dimensions. He posited that this comprehensive strategy represents the optimal route to sustainable stability for Libya and the wider region.
Furthermore, Abdel Atty confirmed Egypt’s ongoing, robust communication with various Libyan factions to support national dialogue efforts and safeguard Libya’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He reiterated that securing the country necessitates the unconditional withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries, in full compliance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The Foreign Minister concluded the meeting by reaffirming Egypt’s absolute commitment to backing both regional and UN initiatives to support national Libyan state institutions, thereby meeting the aspirations of the Libyan people for security, development, and prosperity.
