Libya elected First Vice-Chair of African Commission on Migrants

Libya was elected to the position of First Vice-Chair of the Executive Bureau for the Special Committee on Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). This election secures a two-year term and prepares the path for Libya to assume the committee’s chairmanship during its subsequent session.

This election occurred on Thursday during the Fifth Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Migrants, which was hosted at the African Union Headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The Libyan delegation was headed by Mohammed Zidane, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Expatriate Affairs, who also serves as the head of the Ministry’s Committee on Illegal Migration. The meetings are tasked with discussing the challenges faced by migrants and IDPs across the continent. The Ministerial Committee is scheduled to adopt expert reports and related resolutions that will subsequently be submitted to the African Union Summit in February 2026.
