The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in Libya has called for an immediate investigation and the prosecution of those responsible for the continued use of potassium bromate in the production of flour, bread, and pastries.
In a statement, the Institution expressed deep concern over the use of the substance, which is prohibited from import, noting that it is being employed in “unsafe proportions” by some producers. The NIHR considers this a grave violation of the citizen’s fundamental right to safe and healthy food, posing a serious threat to public health.
The Institution stressed the need for urgent action against all parties—whether individuals, private companies, or public institutions—illegally supplying or using the substance, demanding they be brought to justice without delay.
The NIHR also demanded a follow-up on the results of ongoing investigations conducted by the Public Prosecution at the Attorney General’s Office. This insistence aims to ensure accountability for those involved in the import and use of potassium bromate, thereby safeguarding consumer rights to safe consumption.
