In an effort by the Government of National Unity to monitor the status of Libyan citizens abroad and uphold human rights, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, Ali Eshtewi, discussed the file of Libyan prisoners detained by Turkish authorities.
Eshtewi, acting as the Deputy Head of the Committee for Monitoring Libyan Prisoners Abroad, led the discussions held in Istanbul. The meeting was attended by the Libyan Consul in Istanbul, Salah Al-Kaseh, alongside the legal advisor, the Consulate’s lawyer, and the Undersecretary’s office manager.
The meeting focused on the problems faced by the detainees and monitoring their legal and humanitarian conditions. The possibility of transferring these convicted individuals to Libya to serve the remainder of their sentences was also explored. In this context, attendees addressed a proposal to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Libyan and Turkish states to regulate the transfer of convicts, while affirming the necessity of respecting the national sovereignty of both countries.
