The International Follow-up Committee on Libya, a body stemming from the Berlin Process, convened a meeting in the capital, Tripoli, co-chaired by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the African Union, the European Union, and the League of Arab States.
The discussions focused on the initial two phases of the political roadmap facilitated by the UN Mission: the reconstitution of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) board and the necessary constitutional and legislative amendments required to hold national elections. Representatives from the House of Representatives (HoR) and the High Council of State (HCS) participated, providing a briefing on their progress on these two fronts. They indicated that headway was being made in discussions regarding the HNEC board’s restructuring, which they anticipate completing shortly, and requested further support from the Mission to convene Libyan parties to finalise these files.
The meeting strongly urged the members of the HoR and the HCS to conclude these tasks as quickly as possible, noting that three months have passed since the political roadmap was announced before the UN Security Council, and the Libyan people are eagerly awaiting tangible progress.
The deliberations also covered UNSMIL’s preparations for launching a “Structured Dialogue” in the coming weeks. They explored how members of the International Follow-up Committee and the working groups of the Berlin Process could contribute to supporting the implementation of this dialogue.
