Speaking at a conference on irregular migration convened by Libya’s interior ministry, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Libya, Major General Mohammad Khair Hasanat, announced that cooperation with Libyan authorities had enabled the repatriation of more than 7,500 Bangladeshi migrants over the past two and a half years, through organised voluntary flights supported by the interior ministry and international organisations.
Hasanat said three flights since October had returned 928 migrants — 718 from Tripoli and 210 from other cities — with a fourth voluntary flight scheduled for 4 December to carry around 310 migrants back to Bangladesh.
He explained that the embassy works in direct coordination with Libya’s interior and foreign ministries to ensure voluntary returns are carried out in an orderly manner, stressing that all flights were conducted with respect for human rights and the dignity of migrants. He praised the role of the interior ministry in issuing official documents and facilitating procedures.
The ambassador emphasised that Bangladesh does not support irregular migration, noting that Libyan authorities had arrested several trafficking gangs and taken legal action against them. He confirmed that the embassy would continue to cooperate with Libyan authorities to combat the phenomenon.
Hasanat concluded by thanking the interior ministry and the Government of National Unity for their efforts to guarantee safe and organised voluntary returns for Bangladeshi migrants in Libya.
