Naziha Abu Al-Saud: Libya’s First International Female Show Jumper Making History

Naziha Abu Al-Saud is recognized as the first Libyan female equestrian to represent the national team in international show jumping competitions. Her career stands as one of the most remarkable journeys in Libyan equestrian history, paving the way for a new generation of female riders and solidifying women’s presence in a sport long dominated by men.

Her journey began in the 1980s at the Airport Road Riding School in Tripoli, supported by her father and international rider Ali Al-Fitouri. She quickly demonstrated her talent among Libya’s top show jumpers, competing in numerous local events. As her skills advanced, she joined the Libyan national team, becoming the first woman to represent Libya internationally. For over 15 years, she competed in the International Equestrian Festival hosted by the Airport Road School, achieving notable results and high rankings.

A turning point came with her participation in the Sweden International Tournament in the early 1990s, where she competed alongside prominent Libyan riders, including Mohamed Al-Saghir, Rifaat Al-Fitouri, and Khalifa Melitan. She won the “Endurance Hat” award after securing first place. Her achievements also included top finishes at the Latakia Championship in Syria, participation in the 1993 Mediterranean Games in Greece with her horse “Raad Al-Khareef,” and strong performances at the international championship in Egypt that same year.

Following her retirement, Abu Al-Saud transitioned from competition to training, founding Libya’s first equestrian school to nurture a new generation of riders. She was recently honored at the University in Benghazi in recognition of her long career and contributions to women’s equestrian development in Libya.

Today, Naziha Abu Al-Saud is celebrated as a symbol of female leadership in Libyan sports, a pioneering figure whose legacy continues to inspire and whose story marks a new chapter in the history of equestrianism in Libya.
