Niger’s ambassador to Libya, Issiad Ag Kato, has underlined his country’s commitment to working within Libyan legislation and international standards, stressing that the success of any “proper system for managing labour” depends on foreign workers respecting the rules that govern their employment.
Speaking at a conference on irregular migration convened by Libya’s interior ministry, Ag Kato said Niger stood firmly alongside the Libyan government and recognised the scale of the challenges it faces. He noted that recent bilateral and international discussions had focused on ideas to bolster stability and address migration in ways that serve the interests of both nations.
The ambassador also highlighted the importance of cooperation between Tripoli and Niamey, particularly in relation to voluntary returns and the organisation of travel for migrants.
Ag Kato praised the efforts of Libyan authorities in tackling irregular migration, describing the work of the Government of National Unity and the interior ministry as “a major undertaking”. He expressed gratitude for Libya’s hospitality, openness and “serious will to confront this issue”, while saluting the local and international partners engaged in the migration file.
