House of Representatives member Jaballah Al-Shaibani announced his absolute rejection of the decision to annex Tawergha municipality to Misrata municipality and establish a subsidiary municipal branch. Al-Shaibani described the move as reflecting a “policy of expansionism and self-aggrandisement” being practiced by the head of the de facto government in Tripoli.
Al-Shaibani clarified that the decision fails to respect the will of Tawergha’s residents and violates local administration rules. He stressed that the measure constitutes a grave transgression of the rule of law, noting that the Tripoli Court of Appeal had issued an explicit ruling to suspend the decision, yet the head of the government “neither adhered to nor respected the court’s judgment.” Al-Shaibani deemed this conduct an attempt to impose a “militia mentality” at the expense of civil state principles.
The parliamentarian confirmed that Tawergha is an “independent municipality” and that no decision undermining its autonomy or status can be accepted without the consent of its people and their legitimate representatives.
Al-Shaibani reiterated his demand for the immediate annulment of the decision and full commitment to judicial rulings. He called upon the Attorney General to urgently intervene to protect the rights of Tawergha residents and, at a minimum, safeguard the authority of the judiciary from any attempts at manipulation, concluding that such decisions pose a danger comparable to “trying to forcefully tame horses” without any legal or social basis.
