Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, speaking during his meeting with Libyan House of Representatives Speaker Aguila Saleh, affirmed that Greece is working through both the European Union and the Security Council to contribute to a comprehensive solution for the Libyan crisis. He stressed that this solution lies in holding elections without foreign interference, leading to the formation of a truly representative government.
According to the Athens News Agency, the Greek Minister pointed out that the European Union’s stance aligns with his country’s rejection of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Turkey and Libya, which he described as illegal and void. Gerapetritis also confirmed Greece’s commitment to training Libyan coast guard officers and welcoming new officers in the near future. The Minister underscored the critical importance of controlling migration flows from Libya to Greece and preventing the establishment of any new migration routes.
For his part, the Special Advisor to the House of Representatives Speaker, Abdul Hamid Safi, explained that Counselor Saleh and his accompanying delegation were visiting following a formal invitation from the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament. Safi reported that the discussions covered political and economic files of mutual interest, resulting in an agreement to establish a Joint Parliamentary Friendship Committee.
The two parties also explored avenues for executive and diplomatic cooperation, agreeing to exchange multiple official visits in the coming period. Safi added that Counselor Saleh provided a detailed and comprehensive explanation of the political situation in Libya, reiterating that the fundamental solution to the current political crisis is the swift holding of presidential and parliamentary elections.
