The Prosecutor General Khalifa Ashour, revealed the existence of a huge number of suspected fraudulent records within the Civil Registry system, amounting to 34,000 entries. Ashour indicated that the cases investigated so far represent only a “nominal percentage” of the total detected instances.
In exclusive statements to “Libya Al-Ahrar Channel,” Ashour clarified that initial reports concerning the forgery operations implicate more than 274 foreign nationals in inserting incorrect records into Libyan citizen databases. He added that legal procedures have been completed for 154 cases, which have already been referred to the competent courts for deliberation.
Ashour stressed that the Libyan employees involved in these operations are subject to severe penalties under the Penal Code, the Illicit Gains Law, and the Economic Penal Code. Conversely, the foreigner involved in the forgery is treated as an accomplice in the crime according to prevailing legislation.
Ashour also pointed out that some foreign nationals proven to be involved in forging records had successfully obtained family subsidies, in addition to other financial benefits reserved exclusively for Libyan citizens. The Prosecutor General affirmed that these violations constitute a clear and direct assault on public funds and the legal rights of citizens.
