During his participation in the International Anti‑Corruption Day events held today in Tripoli, EU Ambassador to Libya Nicola Orland announced the launch of a new phase of a capacity‑building program focused on preventing and combating corruption and money laundering. The initiative is supported by the European Union and implemented in partnership with the Government of National Unity and the Administrative Control Authority, in cooperation with ODC, which successfully completed the program’s first phase.
In his remarks, Orland said that marking this international day reflects a growing awareness of the heavy cost corruption imposes on societies. He noted that the presence of Libyan institutions at the event signals a clear commitment to strengthening the legal and regulatory frameworks needed to rebuild public trust and lay the foundations of a modern, stable state.
The ambassador explained that the new phase of the EU‑backed program will draw on both Libyan and international expertise, emphasizing the EU’s pride in supporting Libya’s efforts to promote integrity and good governance.
Orland described corruption as a global phenomenon that spares no country, often emerging from institutional weakness and internal divisions, which in turn undermine the state, threaten security, widen inequality, and obstruct development. He stressed the need for constant vigilance to prevent corruption and pursue those responsible, reaffirming the EU’s support for Libya’s efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
