Amina Al‑Mahjoub, a member of the High Council of State, said that overcoming the current political deadlock requires genuine political will to finalize the agreement between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, and to break away from the parties benefiting from the ongoing stalemate. She stressed that consensus between the two chambers already exists but is not being translated into practical steps due to what she described as “ruling powers.”
In a phone interview with Al‑Massar TV, Al‑Mahjoub explained that the President of the High Council of State, Mohamed Takala, informed members during yesterday’s session that he will soon meet with House Speaker Aguila Saleh to discuss the sovereign positions file, noting that Takala emphasized the discussions would not take long.
She added that there is an almost complete agreement between members of both chambers regarding the sovereign positions, but external pressures and interference from certain actors are preventing tangible progress.
Al‑Mahjoub also criticized the 6+6 Committee’s laws, describing them as unfit for adoption and “flawed,” noting that the UN mission itself has identified legal deficiencies in the electoral legislation. This, she said, prompted the mission to call for forming a new committee or reconvening the existing one to amend the laws in a way that aligns with the aspirations of Libyans for genuine elections.
