On Wednesday, Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed al‑Menfi received Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at the Council’s headquarters. She was accompanied by Othman Belbeisi, IOM Regional Office Director for the Middle East and North Africa, and Nicoletta Giordano, Head of the IOM Office in Libya, in the presence of Major General Mohamed bin Youssef.
The meeting focused on a range of issues related to illegal migration, including organized criminal activities and their security and humanitarian repercussions at both regional and international levels. The two sides also discussed mechanisms for cooperation in managing migration, combating human trafficking networks, and curbing the flow of illegal migration.
Al‑Menfi emphasized that Libya is a transit country rather than a destination, underscoring the importance of collective international efforts to address the root causes of migration and to support stability in countries of origin. He reaffirmed Libya’s commitment to working with the IOM in a manner that safeguards migrants’ dignity and respects international human rights standards.
For her part, the IOM Director General expressed appreciation for the ongoing cooperation with the Presidential Council and confirmed the organization’s readiness to continue providing technical and logistical support, while strengthening partnership programs aimed at ensuring safe and humane migration management.
