The head of the Parliamentary Committee for the Verification of Libyan Frozen Assets Abroad, Youssef Aqouri, affirmed that interference with these funds constitutes a direct violation of the rights of the Libyan people and future generations, stressing that the committee will continue its work relentlessly to protect and recover them.
This came at the UN Security Council session held on Friday, which addressed the issue of Libya’s frozen assets and the serious violations surrounding them. During the briefing, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Benjama, stated that these assets are being eroded and misused by foreign financial institutions, in clear breach of international law and relevant UN resolutions. He called for accountability and compensation for Libya.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, also stressed the danger of tampering with Libya’s frozen funds, urging strict oversight of their management and preservation as property of the Libyan people.
In his remarks, Aqouri welcomed international positions supporting Libya’s demand for a comprehensive financial audit of all frozen assets and compensation for any violations, stressing that mismanagement or manipulation amounts to a direct assault on national sovereignty. He explained that the committee will pursue all parliamentary, legal, and diplomatic measures to hold those responsible accountable, safeguard Libya’s funds, and restore the country’s rights, in coordination with friendly states at the Security Council.
