The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya, Hannah Tetteh, has called on the Libyan authorities to “expedite a comprehensive, impartial, and transparent investigation” into the killing of activist Khansa al-Majahid, and to hold all those involved accountable.
She made this appeal during her briefing today to the United Nations Security Council, where she pointed out that the crime “sends a discouraging message to Libyan women regarding participation in public life and threatens to silence their voices at a critical time when the country needs all their contributions.”
Tetteh expressed the profound concern of the UN mission regarding the ongoing human rights violations in Libya, which include violence against women, refugees, migrants, and marginalized groups, as well as deaths in detention centers. She emphasized the urgent need to take immediate measures to ensure safe participation for all in civil life.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General also stressed the importance of adopting a specific law criminalizing violence against women in Libya as a fundamental step towards protecting rights and ensuring women’s safe and effective participation in public life.
