Professor Dr. Al‑Sadiq Ahmed Makhlouf, born in Benghazi in 1937 on the historic Al‑Shuwaikhat Street, has passed away, leaving behind a distinguished legacy as one of Libya’s most prominent medical figures. An orthopedic consultant, former dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Benghazi University, and former director general of Al‑Jalaa Hospital, he embarked on a lifelong journey of service to his city and nation, leaving an indelible mark in both medicine and art.
Through the leadership positions he held, Dr. Makhlouf contributed significantly to advancing Libya’s medical and educational systems, modernizing the Faculty of Medicine and improving hospital management. He was also active internationally, holding membership in the Swiss Association for Fracture Fixation and the European Society of Orthopaedics. His expertise was documented in his English‑language reference book Essentials of Orthopaedics and Fractures.
His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Cairo University in 1963, followed by diplomas in General Surgery (1965) and Orthopedic Surgery (1970). In 1980, he earned both a doctorate and master’s degree in advanced fracture fixation from Switzerland.
Beyond his medical career, Dr. Makhlouf was celebrated as a painter, poet, and musician. His final public recognition came in October 2024 at the International University, which honored his artistic achievements with an exhibition of his works. His talent, nurtured since childhood at Al‑Amir School under teacher Yahya Al‑Badawi, flourished through exhibitions in Cairo, Geneva, London, and Paris.
