Six candidates vying for the leadership of a new unified Libyan government have issued a formal legal notice to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh. The candidates called for the immediate resumption of the government formation process and the scheduling of an official session to vote on a new Prime Minister, as part of the ongoing political transition.
The candidates clarified that their applications were submitted in line with the official announcements from the House of Representatives and the consensus reached with the High Council of State. They emphasized that they have fulfilled all legal and procedural requirements, including the presentation of their government programs during previous official sessions.
The legal notice highlighted that the High Council of State has already referred the final list of eligible candidates to the House of Representatives. Consequently, they argue that all requirements for the consensus-based track between the two chambers have been met, necessitating a vote.
The candidates also stressed that forming a new, unified government is a mandatory prerequisite for holding credible national elections. They pointed out that the current presidential election laws require a neutral executive body to ensure fairness and prevent candidates from holding government positions during the race. They questioned the feasibility of conducting transparent elections within a short timeframe while the country remains divided between two competing administrations.
The notice concluded with a request for the House of Representatives to hold a session as soon as possible to vote on the Prime Minister’s position, aiming to unify the executive branch and prevent further political fragmentation in Libya.
